What our couples love about celebrating here at Captain’s Rest
Some weddings need a venue — but couples who choose to elope here need a place, and Captain's Rest is just that, for as long as you’d like. No rush to set up, or pack down, no need to move on.
We’re honoured to become a special part of your universe.
Eloping in Tasmania — Your Questions, Answered
Can you legally elope in Tasmania?
Beautifully, yes. Australian law asks for two things: a Notice of Intended Marriage lodged with your celebrant at least one month before the day, and two witnesses over eighteen. Your celebrant handles the paperwork; we'll introduce you to our trusted locals who will make organising your beautiful moment easy.
How many guests can we bring?
Captain's Rest is intimate by design. Elopements begin with the two of you and a small handful of your dearest can join for the day by arrangement up to eight. If your list is longer than we can squeeze inside, we're probably not the right your venue for your ceremony - but we’d love to host you for your honeymoon!
When is the best time of year to elope in Tasmania?
Honestly? Every season here has its own beauty. Summer gives long golden evenings across still waters; autumn is crisp and amber; winter is our very favourite — rain on the tin roof, the fire lit, a harbour like glass, and the whole west coast feeling like it was arranged just for the two of you. We’ve written a guide for our guests about the seasons here for you to explore your options in more detail.
What happens if it rains on our special day?
Inside is just as gorgeous as outside with rain trickling down the antique window panes. This is the wild west coast, and weather is part of our story here. A "bad weather" day here is absolutely gorgeous, and yes — if our ducks are doubling as your guests they are more than welcome inside.
Can you recommend a celebrant and photographer?
Yes — we know and love the absolute best people and teams this island has to offer. We'll happily connect you with all the suppliers we trust and work with, including celebrants, photographers, elopement planners, florists and catering once you have approved your quote and we have booked your dates.
Do we stay at Captain's Rest on our wedding night?
Your venue is your honeymoon suite, and you’ll wake up married in one of the most beautiful places on earth, now made yours. Most of our couples stay on for a week post-ceremony to make the most of their special moment in time.
Can children come to our elopement?
Absolutely, everyone is welcome here with open arms. And if you want to bring a beloved pet, that promises to be well behaved with the ducks, we’d love to host them too.
