For those looking to craft a getaway steeped in solitude, natural and historic beauty and rich in true adventure, we’ve crafted a guide of the best local experiences after the last 8 years curating trips for our guests here at Captain’s Rest.

Start Here.

Before any trip to the West Coast, a visit to this page is a must. The area is so vast, and the to-do’s extensive, the visitor site is an excellent resource for helping to plan your trip, be it hiking, swimming, fishing, mountain biking, site seeing, exploring or exploring the heritage of the region frozen in time.

There are 5 main regions to explore. Strahan, Queenstown, Zeehan, Rosebury and Tullah, each offering a completely different landscape and experience.

Top Tips.

We honestly do recommend at least 5 days in the region for a traveller that is looking for an intrepid adventure, and for those looking for a more luxe view into the region, a 3-4 day stay based in Strahan is your go-to.

Make sure you are well stocked and fueled at all times, as stores and fuel is few and far between (which is just how we like it). You can download this map - “the official guide to getting lost” to help you explore the region as not many places are covered with mobile phone connectivity.

Top Hikes.

You can truely explore the West Coast without ever bumping into a soul. We reccomend using the AllTrails App and exploring the hikes in the West Coast Region on this list. Make sure you are well prepared with fuel for your car, water, food and warmth before you leave.

Lastly, for future guests checking into Captain’s Rest, get in touch, we have a local list of experiences we keep secret just for you, including having freshly cooked local crayfish delivered straight to your door!
